Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF)
As inspiring a non-profit organization as any you'll ever find
During my long career in the investment management and research business, I have seen thousands of “ticker symbols,” for stocks and funds. PDJF looks like it could be a ticker symbol for a company. But it isn’t. In fact, it is more significant than any ticker symbol I could ever imagine. Because of what they do, and the role they play for a specialized group of world-class athletes who put their lives at risk over and over, and through unfortunate luck and fate, ended up disabled, and unable to return to the profession they love.
Part of my passion for the sport of horse racing goes back to an old expression I use in many aspects of life: I truly respect and admire people who do things I could never, ever do…like, ever (Taylor Swift reference there).
I learned about PDJF in a way most don’t. I met one of their beneficiaries. He was not only a disabled jockey, but after his accident decades ago, as he learned more about PDJF, he figured out that all was not right there. So he took the initiative to help fix what was not right. That’s ancient history now, and PDJF.org’s work is remarkable. Here’s their “who we are” from their website, a link to which is shown below.
The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) is an independent charitable organization that provides financial assistance to jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries.
Here is a link to their site. We hope you will find as much meaning out of getting to know the work of PDJF as we have!
